Giant cat relatives: Norwegian Forest cats and Maine Coons

Very often cat lovers can mix this two cat breeds because they are very similar. It is even believed that Maine Coon cats are descendant to the Norwegian forest cats. I am sure everybody know how this cats look, and almost everyone mix them one with the other. On the first sight they are very similar.

The similarity they have are the fact that they are very big cats, have long silky coats, they are outgoing and friendly, very intelligent, but they have many differences. Read more about it:

Loyalty

Maine Coons are very loyal cats and they enjoy spending time with their owners, but the Norwegian forest cats not so much.

Playfulness

Both like to play, but Maine Coons are more into games, while the Norwegian are the lazy ones.

Training

If you want to train your cat like you usually train dogs, the Maine Coon is the cat for that, they are even called “dogs of the cat world”. On the other hand, Norwegian Forest cats don’t want to be someone’s dogs.

Origin

Norwegian forest cats come from Norway as their name suggest, while the Maine Coons are popular in the United States.

Nicknames

Maine coons are also known as Coon Cat, Maine Cat, Maine Shag, The Gentle Giants, American Longhair and Snowshoe cats.

Norwegian forest cat’s nicknames are: Skogkatt, Skaukatt, Norsk Skogkatt, Weegie or Norsk Skaukatt.

The Look

The similarity in their look is their fluffiness. They have different head shape, and different coat. Norwegian Forest cats have triangular shaped head, flat forehead and a straight nose and this is the main feature which can help you differ these two cat breeds.

Maine Coons have wedge-shaped head and high cheekbones and usually they have a happy looking face. Their tail is fluffy and has no real direction.

Size and life expectancy

Norwegian Forest cats usually live from 10 to 12 years, while Maine Coons 12 to 13 years. The first weigh from 10 to 16 lbs and the latter 12 to 15 lbs.

Another similarity they have is that they are great with children and you will enjoy to have them in your home. I personally believe that you would not make a mistake if you choose any of these two cat breeds to be your pet.

Which one would you choose?

Howdy! Do you know if they make any plugins to protect against hackers? I’m kinda paranoid about losing everything I’ve worked hard on. Any recommendations?
