Read these few tips for grooming your Maine Coon cat

One of the best thing about the Maine Coon cats is their coating. For that reason, we need to make sure that it always looks great and be clean. Keeping it groomed and nice it is also important if you want to take your cat on a cat show or a beauty contest. Read these few tips of how to groom your Maine Coon and make sure it always looks perfect.

Bathe your Maine Coon

Before you bathe your cat you need to make sure that you clip its nails so they can be less sharp. It is recommended that you do this 24 hours before the bath. Also, you need to clean its ears if necessary (you can do this with alcohol on cotton balls or with cleaning solution) and comb the coat of the cat. Next thing to do is to fill the basin or bathtub with warm water and pour two capfuls of Woolite – this is a delicate laundry cleanser or Shaklee’s Basic H cleaner. These products will help the water to penetrate quickly through the cat’s coat and wet the fur down to the skin. When you have put the products in the water, stir it and start pouring cups of it on your cat, but make sure to avoid its eyes or ears. Make sure to wet down their fur behind the ears, the chins, paws and all its parts.

If your cat has slightly greasy coat, you need to treat its fur with a degreaser when their fur is still dry. It is advised to use the brands D&L cleaner or D’Grease. Massage the degreaser few minutes on their fur in the areas of their chest, stomach, behind the ears and tail. Important part here is to be careful not to let your cat lick itself while some cleaning products are applied on it.

Cat’s deep cleansing

The next step in the grooming of Maine Coon is to drain the basin when the cat is soaking wet and rinse it briefly. Here comes the part when you need to remove the dirt and grease from their coat which many people do with a dish washing detergent such as Ajax, Dawn or Ivory. You need to shampoo their coat and if some of the dirt or stains do not come off repeat this step few times, until you are sure that the fur is clean. Make sure that you massage them gently with the middle part of the fingers so you don’t damage their fur.

If your cat has excessively oily fur you can apply grooming powders few hours before the bath. The powder will absorb the oil so it will be easier to be cleaned. Be careful while using the powder, not to put it near their eyes and don’t let them breath it in.

In case your cat is not that dirty or oily you can skip these parts with the shampoos mentioned above and start with using a medicated grooming shampoo. Don’t use medicated shampoos on pregnant cats. After you have rinsed well the last shampoo, in order to make sure that the soap is removed from its coat you need to fill the basin with new fresh warm water and put ½ cup of distilled white vinegar. Pour it on your cat and rinse it more until you make sure that the fur is clean.

Dry your cat

When you are done washing your Maine Coon take few towels and dry it with them. Remove as much as moisture as you can and then cover it with them and leave it still for 5-6 minutes. While it sits like that, comb your cat. If your cat is not afraid, you can use a dryer to dry it.

In the end, what you need to remember is that all the cats are different and not every shampoo or product is good for them. So, experiment with that, and when you find the perfect one, and when you set up the best system of grooming, use that.
